  7. INTRODUCTION
  8.  
  9. Please print INSTALL.TXT (about 7 pages) so all the instructions
  10. will be visible while you install MasterMind Typing.  Unless
  11. Windows has control, you may tap PrintScreen now to record just
  12. the directions for using Notepad to both display and print.
  13.  
  14. We recommend printing via Notepad of the Windows Accessories,
  15. because it will paginate.  In Notepad, select File | Open and
  16. specify this file as
  17.       <location>\INSTALL.TXT
  18. Before installation, the <location> of INSTALL.TXT usually is A:
  19. or B:.  After installation, <location> is C:\MMTYPE or another
  20. <drive>:\path that you have provided.
  21.  
  22. With this text on-screen in Notepad, the menu selections are
  23.       File | Print
  24.  
  25. Alternatively, you can print from DOS 5.x Edit or from Write of
  26. Windows.  If you open INSTALL.TXT in Write, choosing "No Conver-
  27. sion" keeps it unformatted.  "Convert" changes it unnecessarily
  28. to .WRI format, which is all right unless you save the change.
  29.  
  30. When you exit from any editor, please do NOT save changes.
  31.  
  32. If you want to print from DOS, a convenient command is
  33.       COPY  <location>\INSTALL.TXT  PRN
  34.  
  35. MasterMind Typing cuts work to about a quarter of any alternative
  36. for learning to touch-type.  The magic is MasterMind's sensitive
  37. way of adjusting repetition for your progress.  Though hard to
  38. explain in words, you will understand it when you have the Mas-
  39. terMind experience.  In the advanced phase of version 2.x,
  40. MasterMind enables you to learn memorable literature, while you
  41. practice typing or just for fun.
  42.  
  43. Prerequisite resources are:
  44.             Windows 3.x in standard or enhanced mode
  45.             80286 or better processor
  46.             2 Mbytes RAM for Win3.1 or 1.5MB for Win3.0
  47.             extended (XMS) memory manager such as HIMEM.SYS
  48.             1.2 Mbytes free on drive C
  49.             EGA or better display, color preferred
  50.             mouse (or equivalent, e.g., trackball)
  51.  
  52. You can check your Windows mode from Program Manager by choosing
  53. Help | About Program Manager.  Standard or enhanced mode is all
  54. right for MasterMind Typing, but enhanced mode needs 2 Mbytes
  55. RAM.  Real mode is incompatible.  Help | About Program Manager
  56. also will disclose Free Memory (RAM).  With just Windows loaded
  57. (before you start MasterMind Typing), Free Memory should be at
  58. least 600 Kbytes.  For quickness, Windows 3.1 users should
  59. install at least 4 Mbytes total RAM.

  61. The distribution diskette of MasterMind Typing may be any of:
  62.       720K (3.5-inch)
  63.       1.44M (3.5-inch)
  64.       1.2M (5.25-inch)
  65. If you got a diskette that your system cannot read, a friend or
  66. the seller can copy from it to a diskette that fits.

  69. LICENSE AGREEMENT; MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE
  70. 13 October, 1992 supersedes prior licenses

  72. By your authorized use of MasterMind Typing, you accept a license
  73. for a single user on the following terms.  If you have an unau-
  74. thorized copy, you have no license and must destroy the copy
  75. promptly to limit your liability for dealing with contraband.
  76.  
  77. Version 1.x is the shareware program distributed for free trial
  78. to those who agree to register if the product is helpful.  For
  79. such trial, we authorize copying and distribution of version 1.x
  80. in the manner described below.  After trying version 1.x suffi-
  81. ciently to see whether it helps you, you must either register or
  82. stop using it.
  83.  
  84. If you register and pay the fee, you get version 2.x including
  85. additional features.  (Site licenses are available to organiza-
  86. tions.)  Version 2.x comes with a 60-day guarantee of satisfac-
  87. tion.  Version 2.x is not shareware.  Except for backup, copying
  88. version 2.x would make you liable for infringement of contract,
  89. patent and copy rights.
  90.  
  91. You do not own either version of the software, which embodies
  92. novel designs and trade secrets.  You must not decode, alter or
  93. reverse-engineer the software or aid another to do so.  Any
  94. effort to imitate the software would breach the contract and,
  95. besides, probably would violate the copyright and/or the patent.

  97. This applies to distribution of version 1.x shareware by both
  98. professionals and amateurs.  Version 1.x shareware distribution
  99. must be either free of charge or within the rules of the Associa-
  100. tion of Shareware Professionals.  To alter a file or to recom-
  101. press the constituent files of MasterMind Typing, a 1.x shareware
  102. distributor must apply for a special license at the author's
  103. discretion, except that EXTRACT.EXE may be renamed as MMTYPE.EXE
  104. or vice-versa.  1.x shareware distribution via removable disk
  105. must include uncompressed INSTALL.TXT.  Otherwise, constituent
  106. files are not distributable.  (Please also see "Shareware Librar-
  107. ies & Phone Links" below.)

  109. For malfunction of the software, no supplier has any liability
  110. beyond refund of the license fee.  There is NO WARRANTY OF
  111. MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS for use and no liability for conse-
  112. quential damages.

  114. If you object to any of these terms, your sole recourse is to
  115. return the unused product immediately for refund.  Violation of
  116. any of its provisions automatically cancels the license.

  126. MEMORY CONFIGURATION, XMS REQUIRED
  127.  
  128. The Microsoft Windows User's Guide discusses memory configuration
  129. in chapter 13 for version 3.0 or chapter 14 for version 3.1.  The
  130. version 3.0 Guide does not explain, though, that about 384K of
  131. your total memory, the portion between 640K and 1 megabyte, is
  132. inaccessible to most programs.  The system design reserves it for
  133. hardware support.
  134.  
  135. For Windows applications, most or all of your configurable
  136. memory--that is, above 1 megabyte--must be extended (XMS), not
  137. expanded (EMS).  EMS is an outmoded, relatively inefficient way
  138. to organize memory.  If you have an EMS configuration to help
  139. older DOS applications, now is the time to update.  MasterMind
  140. Typing should have at least 500K of XMS memory to run under
  141. Windows standard mode, that is, at least 1.5 Mbytes total memory. 
  142. To use enhanced mode with a '386 or better processor, you need at
  143. least a megabyte of XMS memory, that is, at least 2 Mbytes total. 
  144. Without XMS memory, MasterMind Typing will not run at all.
  145.  
  146. If you update all the configurable memory from EMS to XMS, you
  147. need to adjust older applications if they have setup parameters
  148. that rely on EMS.  An older application may slow because only the
  149. conventional 640K RAM will be accessible.  But the publisher now
  150. should have an upgrade version that works with XMS memory and may
  151. be a Windows application too.  If you have enough memory, it may
  152. be possible to configure it as partly EMS and partly XMS to suit
  153. all applications.
  154.  
  155. The method to reconfigure memory varies among computer makers. 
  156. Typically, one starts a setup program by pressing some combina-
  157. tion of keys during bootup.  If your hardware manual is unclear,
  158. you may need help from whomever set up your system originally. 
  159. Because XMS memory is a Windows requirement involving other
  160. applications and hardware, we do not advise about memory configu-
  161. ration.  For advice about Windows, Microsoft Product Support is

  164. A disk cache such as SMARTDRV can improve speed, though it may
  165. complicate system setup for mixed DOS and Windows applications.
  166.  
  167.  
  168. INSTALLATION FROM FLOPPY TO HARD DISK
  169.  
  170. This does not apply if you downloaded MMTYPE.EXE or MMTYPE.ZIP
  171. from another computer to your hard disk.
  172.  
  173. MasterMind Typing on the floppy disk cannot execute because it is
  174. in compressed format.  For the same reason, you cannot install
  175. MasterMind Typing with COPY or XCOPY commands.  If D is the
  176. floppy drive where you have the MasterMind Typing distribution
  177. diskette, the DOS-level command
  178.       D:extract
  179. will decompress the files and write them in directory \MMTYPE of
  180. the current drive.  Creation of directory \MMTYPE will be auto-
  181. matic too unless it already exists.
  182.  
  183. In place of the generic D, please substitute the actual letter of
  184. the floppy drive, usually A or B.  It is immaterial whether
  185. D:EXTRACT be in capital or small letters.  If reinstalling, you
  186. will get prompts for a series of Y's (yes) that you must key to
  187. overwrite the older MasterMind Typing files.
  188.  
  189. You must execute D:EXTRACT from a DOS prompt, which is available
  190. before Windows starts or from the Main window after Windows
  191. starts.  (Under the Program Manager or File Manager of Windows,
  192. D:EXTRACT attempts incorrectly to install on the floppy drive.) 
  193. Please observe the DOS prompt and BE SURE THE CURRENT DRIVE IS
  194. THE HARD DISK WHERE YOU WANT THE INSTALLATION TO GO.  The floppy
  195. drive must not be current.  On the hard drive, it does not matter
  196. what directory is current.
  197.  
  198. If directory \MMTYPE does not suit you, you can move the files
  199. elsewhere after installation.  This installation does not yet
  200. make MasterMind Typing accessible under Windows.  Please see
  201. below.
  202.  
  203.  
  204. SHAREWARE LIBRARIES & PHONE LINKS
  205.  
  206. This does not apply if you are installing MasterMind Typing from
  207. a floppy disk.
  208.  
  209. We encourage distribution of version 1.x (shareware) and forbid
  210. it for version 2.x.  You are welcome to upload shareware version
  211. 1.x to your favorite bulletin boards in compressed form under the
  212. name MMTYPE.EXE.  This means changing the name of the compressed
  213. archive if you acquired it as EXTRACT.EXE on a floppy disk.  If
  214. you distribute shareware version 1.x EXTRACT.EXE via removable
  215. disk, recipients need uncompressed INSTALL.TXT too.  Except
  216. INSTALL.TXT, distribute only the original, compressed archive of
  217. shareware 1.x, not the constituent files.
  218.  
  219. The original archive of MasterMind Typing uses LHA compression. 
  220. The compressed MMTYPE.EXE or EXTRACT.EXE will self-extract and
  221. write the constituent files in directory \MMTYPE.  Unlike PKSFX
  222. archives, self-extraction is independent of the current directory
  223. and fully automatic including directory \MMTYPE creation (pro-
  224. vided that no floppy disk is involved).  The same procedure
  225. reinstalls if directory \MMTYPE already exists.  There will be
  226. prompts for a series of Y's (yes) that the installer must key to
  227. overwrite prior MasterMind Typing files.
  228.  
  229. You may archive MasterMind Typing differently for your personal
  230. use; but you must apply for a special license before issuing a
  231. copy of a different archive to anyone else.  We control this to
  232. keep installation foolproof.  A "different" archive is any
  233. recompression or rearchive of MasterMind Typing's constituent
  234. files.  This applies only to shareware version 1.x, as 2.x is not
  235. distributable at all.
  236.  
  237. If you received a .ZIP archive of MasterMind Typing, please
  238. notify us unless it has a special license.  With a .ZIP archive,
  239. the installer must explicitly create directory \MMTYPE, or the
  240. equivalent, and must run an unzip utility to decompress files
  241. into the new directory.  Decompression should make INSTALL.TXT
  242. (this document) available to guide the installer onward.
  243.  
  244. Please see below about access to MasterMind Typing from Windows. 
  245. After installation, MMTYPE.EXE or MMTYPE.ZIP becomes unnecessary,
  246. except for backup or, as to shareware 1.x, for redistribution. 
  247. You must not erase MMTYPE.TBK, though.
  248.

  250. ACCESS UNDER WINDOWS
  251.  
  252. The installed files and approximate sizes on your hard disk will
  253. be:

  263. Putting MasterMind Typing on your hard disk does not make it
  264. accessible under Windows.  When it is on your hard disk, please
  265. make MasterMind Typing accessible as follows.
  266.  
  267. 1.  In Windows, activate Program Manager.  Then, if you already
  268. have a program group that suits MasterMind Typing, please skip to
  269. part 2.  Every Windows application is a member of some group.  If
  270. you now have no program group for Windows applications, here is
  271. how to create one.  From the Program Manager menu bar, choose
  272.       File | New
  273. In the New Program Object dialog box, select Program Group, then
  274. click OK.  This produces the Program Group Properties dialog box. 
  275. As the Description, enter
  276.       Applications
  277. (It suffices to leave the Group File space blank.)  Then click OK
  278. in Program Group Properties.  This leaves on the screen an
  279. active, group window for Windows applications.
  280.  
  281. 2.  If it is not active already, now activate the group window
  282. where you want the MasterMind Typing icon, keeping Program
  283. Manager's menu bar visible.
  284.  
  285. 3.  From Program Manager, choose
  286.       File | New
  287.  
  288. 4.  In the New Program Object dialog box, select Program Item,
  289. then click OK.  This produces the Program Item Properties dialog
  290. box.  As the Description, enter
  291.       Typing
  292.  
  293. 5.  As the Command Line, enter
  294.       C:\MMTYPE\MMTBOOK.EXE MMTYPE
  295. or a substitute conforming to the directory of MasterMind Typing
  296. files, if you put them elsewhere.  The final command is always
  297.       MMTBOOK.EXE MMTYPE
  298.  
  299. 6.  To conclude, click OK in Program Item Properties.  The icon,
  300. overlapping M's, should appear in your chosen window, where you
  301. may double-click on it to start MasterMind Typing.
  302.  
  303.  
  304. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
  305.  
  306. MasterMind Typing will put appropriate instructions on-screen as
  307. you use it.  If you wish, a mouse click on a PRINT button will
  308. send the instructions of interest to your printer.
  309.  
  310. You will use your mouse to set up a lesson.  Within a lesson,
  311. though, the mouse is inoperative and you use keys only.  The
  312. control to stop or interrupt a lesson is function key <F1>.
  313.  
  314. Before reading the instructions thoroughly, it helps to start
  315. your first lesson and observe how MasterMind Typing works.  This
  316. will make the instructions easier to understand.  But please run
  317. a lesson no more than a few minutes before reading the instruc-
  318. tions, or you will develop bad habits.
